Introduction :-

Situated on the south eastern side of the Indian peninsula, Tamil Nadu is a land steeped in tradition. Ancient culture and heritage come alive in true form here. It Is a traditional state known for its dance and music. The temples at Madurai, Thanjavur and Rameswaram and also at the country’s southern tip Kanyakumari, where the three seas meet, are unique and famous.Tamil Nadu Is also known for its fabulous bird sanctuary of Vedanthangal; the Pallava cave temples, the hill resorts of Yercaud, Coonoor and Kotagiri; the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in the Nilgiris; the spectacular jellikattu – the Iocal bull fight; the car pageants of Srirangam, Thiruvarur and Kanchipuram; the floating festival at Madurai, Triplicane and Mylapore in Chebbai; the celebrations of Pongal and Navaratri festival.

History

Tamil Nadu is one of the most ancient regions in Indian history of which dates back some 6000 years. The state represents the nuceus of Dravidian culture in India, which antedated the Aryan culture in India by almost a thousand years. Tamil Nadu was variously ruled by the Che    ras, Cholas and Pandyas prior the Christian era. Karikalan Chola, the greatest of the earlier Chola. With the establishment of East India Company at Madras in 1639, a new chapter was opened in the Tamil Nadu. Slowly and steadily the state came under British sway.     When India became independent, the old Madras Province comprising Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and part of Kerala continued as the state of Madras. After some years of agitation for separate, Andhra Pradesh was created. On 14th January 1969, Madras state changed its name to Tamil Nadu. The capital city Madras was renamed Chennai in 1996.

Tourist attraction of Tamil Nadu :-

Kapaleeswarar
Kapaleeswarar, an ancient Shiva temple, is the biggest temple in Chennai. A masterpiece of Dravidian style and displays the architectural elements - gopurams, mandapams and a tank. There are some fragmentary inscriptions dating back to 1250 AD.

The Santhome Cathedral Church
The Santhome Cathedral Church built in 1504, then rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in 1893, this Roman Catholic Church near Kapaleeshwarar temple is said to house the remains of St. Thomas the Apostle.

Meenakshi Temple :-
This temple is the city's main attraction. This temple is nearly 2000 years old  placed in the heart of the old town - a splendid example of Dravidian architecture. The present temple was designed in 1560 by Vishwanatha Nayak and subsequently built during the reign of Tirumalai Nayak.

Gandhi Museum :-
The 300-year-old palace now converted into Museum has a picture gallery, a library of personal memorable of the Mahatma Gandhi and an exhibit of South Indian handicrafts and village industries.
