Since the earliest time the ancient time Surat has been renowned for its fine
silks and its exquisite brocades and its trade in spices. Surat has been one of
the most prosperous of India's cities in 17 th and 18 th century. The East India
Company established its first warehouses in Surat in 1612. And it was at Surat
that Sir Thomas Roe landed when he came as king James' Ambassador to the court
of the Emperor Jehangir. In Mughal times, Surat was the m ain port from which
pilgrims sailed to Mecca.
Surat stands on the banks of the River Tapti and was once one of western India's major ports and trading towns during Mughal Period. The ancient port of Surat was famous for its fine silks and exquisite brocades and trade in spices and also for pilgrims to sail for Mecca. For centuries, it has been known as a center of trade and textiles. It is also an important diamond-cutting center too.
